Winter can make wildlife trips across India more comfortable, but there is no single safari season or opening date that applies everywhere. Some parks welcome visitors from October, some zones open later, and birding destinations follow a different rhythm from tiger reserves. Here are 10 places to consider for the 2026–27 winter season, with the dates and booking details to check before you set out.
This list includes national parks and tiger reserves as well as wildlife sanctuaries. Park rules, safari availability and operating dates can change, so confirm the details for your chosen zone through the relevant official portal before booking travel.
1. Kanha Tiger Reserve, Madhya Pradesh
Kanha is one of several Madhya Pradesh reserves reported to have reopened for the 2026–27 season on 1 October 2026. The state’s forest booking portal is the place to check permits and dates. Look at the available zones and safari rounds rather than assuming the whole reserve has identical access.
2. Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve, Madhya Pradesh
Bandhavgarh was also included in reports of Madhya Pradesh’s 1 October reopening. For a winter visit, check the live booking system as early as possible and confirm your selected zone before finalising accommodation. Availability can vary by date, zone and safari round.
3. Pench Tiger Reserve, Madhya Pradesh
The Madhya Pradesh side of Pench was reported open from 1 October. Pench spans Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra, so check that you are using the booking system and rules for the state and gate you plan to visit. Do not assume a permit for one side covers the other.
4. Satpura Tiger Reserve, Madhya Pradesh
Satpura was among the Madhya Pradesh reserves reported to reopen on 1 October. Use the official state portal to check the current options for your dates. If you are building a wider central India road trip, leave room in the schedule for a reserve-specific booking rather than planning the safari as a casual stop along the drive.
Booking note for these four reserves: The 1 October 2026 reopening date is reported in India Imagine’s 2026–27 season guide, published on 17 August 2026. Because reserve information can show different standard dates or conditions for individual zones, verify your exact dates on the Madhya Pradesh Forest Department booking portal. This guide does not have a live snapshot of permit availability.
Driving to more than one of these? Kanha, Bandhavgarh, Pench and Satpura sit in the same part of Madhya Pradesh, so they can be planned as one circuit. Plan the route and the stops between them in the Bharat Brumhmaan app, then book each safari zone on the official portal.
5. Ranthambore Tiger Reserve, Rajasthan
Ranthambore reopened for its October–December 2026 season on 1 October, according to current season reporting. The Rajasthan Forest Department handles online safari bookings. Check the portal for remaining availability and the specific safari zone for your permit; popular dates may be difficult to secure, so avoid treating a search result or an old booking page as confirmation.
For official booking information, visit Rajasthan Forest Department’s safari booking page.
6. Corbett Tiger Reserve, Uttarakhand
Corbett is a useful reminder that a reserve may not have one opening date for every zone. The official portal lists Jhirna and Dhela as year-round zones, while Dhikala’s core season begins on 15 November 2026. Check the portal for the zone and activity you want, because a safari or stay in one area does not mean another is open.
Use the official Corbett online booking portal to check current dates and availability.
7. Dudhwa Tiger Reserve, Uttar Pradesh
Dudhwa’s 2026–27 season is scheduled to begin on 1 November 2026, according to reporting published on 15 October. That makes it a possible early-November plan, but confirm that the date and the safari you want are operating before you travel. The official Dudhwa safari booking page is the place to check permits.
Dudhwa is in Uttar Pradesh’s Terai region. If you are driving, plan around your confirmed entry time and allow flexibility for the journey rather than relying on an unverified travel-time estimate.
8. Keoladeo National Park, Bharatpur, Rajasthan
If you would rather watch birds than focus on a jeep safari, Keoladeo offers a different kind of winter wildlife trip. UNESCO describes the park as an important wintering and staging area for migratory waterbirds, with December and January identified as peak bird-watching months in its monitoring material. Conditions and sightings vary, so give yourself time to explore rather than expecting a particular bird on a particular day.
The park can be explored on foot, by bicycle or by cycle-rickshaw, and Rajasthan Tourism notes that trained rickshaw guides can help visitors look for birds. Check current access details through Rajasthan Tourism’s Keoladeo page.
9. Tipeshwar Wildlife Sanctuary, Maharashtra
Tipeshwar is a winter option for travellers interested in a forest safari in Yavatmal district. A seasonal update published on 8 October 2026 reported that the sanctuary had opened for the winter season from 1 October. The official Maharashtra Tourism page lists Sunna, Mathani and Kodori as entry points, so check the live booking information rather than relying on an older gate list.
For current arrangements, start with the Maharashtra Ecotourism portal and confirm the date, gate and safari slot before you travel. The reported 2026 reopening date and the currently operating gates come from secondary reporting, so treat them as a starting point and check them against the live official booking information.
If Tipeshwar is already on your road-trip shortlist, our Tipeshwar self-drive tour guide offers a related planning reference without replacing the need to verify forest permits and current rules.
10. Ladakh’s high-altitude snow leopard safari
Ladakh launched its high-altitude wildlife safari on 7 October 2026, with initial operating areas reported as Rumbak, Shang and Uley. Unlike the other entries here, this is a guided safari initiative in high-altitude wildlife areas, not a conventional sanctuary reopening. It offers a chance to look for snow leopards in their habitat, but a sighting is never guaranteed.
As of 29 October 2026, public reporting said fares, booking arrangements, daily timings and the full operating calendar had not yet been announced. Check for updates from the Ladakh Administration before making plans or paying an operator, and confirm whether the public booking process and winter operating details have since been announced. The period from late December through March is cited as a promising window for sightings as snow can bring animals to lower elevations, but exact conditions vary.
Plan the dates as carefully as the drive
Safari permits and holiday dates are separate parts of trip planning. The DoPT memorandum dated 16 July 2026 concerns the Central Government holiday calendar for 2027, not 2026. Private employers set their own holiday lists, states add regional festivals, and dates for some festivals depend on moon sightings. Check the relevant employer, state and official calendar before building a winter road trip around a long weekend.
Before you leave, confirm your safari zone and permit, check the reserve’s current operating notices, and allow enough time to reach the correct gate. Pack warm layers for early starts, and remember that wildlife sightings depend on the animals and conditions on the day.
Turn your safari shortlist into a road trip.
The app plans the drive to your gate: compare the quickest road with a scenic one, check today's state-wise fuel prices, and find stops along the way. Book the safari zone itself on the official portal.
