Spiti suits independent travellers, couples and families with older children who are comfortable with remote roads and simple days. It is less about collecting viewpoints and more about letting the valley reveal itself one bend at a time.

The drive

01 / The route itself

Route shape

The gentler seasonal approach comes through Shimla and Kinnaur, then loops through Tabo, Dhankar and Kaza before returning when the higher Manali side is open. Build the route around villages and monasteries, not just the main town.

Best time to go

The Kinnaur side is generally the more dependable seasonal approach, while the Manali side depends on the opening of the high pass road. Check conditions before you choose a circuit.

How long to give it

Give it a week to ten days if you want the road to feel spacious. A shorter trip is possible, but you will spend more of it simply getting in and out.

What the road feels like

Expect narrow mountain roads, rough sections and long stretches with few services. The road rewards an early start and unhurried driving, especially when you are sharing it with local traffic.

Stops worth the detour

02 / Make a little room

  • 01

    Sarahan

A forested temple-town pause before the landscape becomes more spare.

  • 02

    Tabo

Walk slowly around the monastery and village lanes after the long approach.

  • 03

    Dhankar

Take the high turn for the monastery and the valley views around it.

  • 04

    Kaza and Key

Use Kaza for supplies and give the nearby monastery and villages a full morning.

Before you go

03 / A little preparation

Fuel and supplies become less predictable once you are deep in the valley. Check road status, carry essentials, respect monastery timings and be ready for weather to change your plan.

Keep the route, the pauses and the places worth remembering in one calm plan.
